If you define community expansively, you may want to take a minute to help the people of Burma: you probably know that Burma's peaceful protests of late September were suppressed:
You may know that Than Shwe's military are currently brutalizing the Burmese people with midnight arrests and detentions (there is no video documentation of this terrorism).
You may also know that China is Burma's major ally (Wang Guangya, China's ambassador to the United Nations, recently said that "the situation in Myanmar is calming down .... and that it does not pose any threat to international or regional peace and security that would call for Security Council action"). Do you agree that massive human rights violations have nothing to do with peace?
If not, you may want to take action. Some call for boycotting the Beijing 2008 Olympic games--not a bad idea but they are 10 months away and Burma's need is now. China can ignore street protests in the U.S. and Europe--but it cannot ignore emails that slow down the processing of ticket sales.
Email ticketsupport@beijing2008.cn; use "tickets" as your subject line; express your concerns! Quoting from the ko-htike website listed below "Shall we work together and show to CHINA what is the real power of people all over the world?"
